L-shaped kitchen for a new build
The owners of this kitchen said from the outset that they wanted the room to feel open at eye level. In order to achieve this we designed in few tall units and zero wall units. We also chose an L-shaped kitchen design to allow room for a large island. They were planning on having a separate utility room, so wanted the storage in the kitchen to be functional.
The client had bought an architect-designed house that needed updating, but they wanted the new kitchen to match the style of the house which was built in the 70s.
Our designs were for an L-shaped kitchen with an island. The client requested seating for four at the breakfast bar but wanted to leave as much work surface as possible on the remainder of the island.
Planning an L-shaped kitchen without wall units
As a new build kitchen we had an empty canvas to start from. But it made the most sense for this to be an L-shaped kitchen. There are no wall units or shelves, to ensure we keep the room as open as possible, and we included only one slightly taller unit to house the ovens.
The breakfast bar on the island is also L-shaped so that people sitting there can enjoy the garden views.
Appliance choices
The client chose a Bora hob with a built-in extractor. So this was placed along the wall to make the ducting outside easy. The sink was placed on the adjacent wall, thus leaving the island worktop untouched.
Choosing fridge drawers avoided the need for a tall fridge / freezer unit. While a separate freezer was placed in the utility room. To enable these deep refrigerated drawers while keeping the streamlined look of the kitchen, we made a matching unit with two deep drawers. This sits adjacent to the fridge unit as part of the island.
