Creating an accessible kitchen - designing to support disability

Is it possible to create an accessible kitchen that is not just useable by people with additional needs, but that actually enhances and brings joy to their lives? We say absolutely!

With the Paralympics kicking off in Paris, we got to talking the other day about accessible kitchen design. About creating spaces and places that are not only useable by people with different types of disabilities, but that create joy and reduce stress in their lives.

One of the benefits of our bespoke kitchen designs is that we work to make sure that everything is precisely suited for the individual who will be using it on a day to day basis.

From supporting various physical disabilities, to considering the nuances of neurodivergence, lets look at some of the ways we design our kitchens to make sure they’re not only beautiful but functional for everyone.

One of the advantages of choosing a bespoke kitchen is the level of customisation it offers. As we often like to say, no two homes are the same. And no two individuals are the same. Particularly if you have specific needs due to a disability.

With a bespoke design you can be sure your kitchen do everything you need it to. Whether you want lower countertops, easy-to-reach cabinets, or specialised storage solutions, our expert designers will work with you to create a truly accessible kitchen that fits your lifestyle, and your needs, perfectly.

Supporting physical disabilities

Accessibility is at the heart of our design philosophy. For individuals with physical disabilities, we ensure that every element of the kitchen is usable and easy to reach. This might include installing pull-out shelves, adjustable height countertops, lever-style handles or creating open spaces for wheelchair access.

We pay attention to the smallest details to ensure that your kitchen is as functional as possible. No matter the challenges you face elsewhere.

Considerations for neurodivergent individuals

It’s not just people with a physical disability who benefit from accessible design. If you or a member of your family are neurodivergent, a well-organised and clutter-free environment can make a world of difference.

We design our bespoke kitchens to provide a sense of order and calm. By giving everything a designated place, we help create a kitchen that’s easy to navigate and manage. Clear storage solutions, logical layouts, and thoughtful placement of appliances will make sure your kitchen remains a stress-free zone.

And we’ve often been told that the cool, tactile surface of our plywood doors is incredibly soothing to run your hands over.

Key elements of accessible kitchen design

Designing around you

Our design process is a fully collaborative process. We start by listening to and understanding your preferences, your daily routines and any specific needs you might have. Only then can we translate this vision into a detailed design, making sure every aspect of the kitchen reflects your personality and requirements.

We are happy to accommodate face-to-face consultations at our workshop and container showroom in Kent, or virtual meetings. Whichever is easier for you to get your vision across to us.

Planning out the space

Perhaps you’re a wheelchair user requiring additional space to get around, or you are partially sighted and need to make sure everything is in a logical place so you can easily find it. Whatever your additional needs, we know it’s vital we take time to plan out the space alongside you.

That way we can talk through the things you like to be able to do, the things you’ve struggled with in your current kitchen and what might help to improve things.

Considering safety

Of course when designing for disability, the goal is to create a space that is not only completely functional, but safe for you and your family. To that end, we might advise that you select non-slip flooring or choosing appliances with an automatic cut-off mechanism. As well as adding additional hand rails, or rounded corners, without detracting from the beauty of the design.

Having discussed your needs and worries, our experts will be able to offer plenty of advice about what’s possible and what others have done before to improve safety in their own kitchens.

The importance of lighting

The idea of creating a considered lighting scheme becomes even more important when we’re designing a kitchen with accessibility in mind. Creating areas of bright, task lighting to aid working in the kitchen at night, as well as dimmable ambient lighting for eating areas and entertaining. And while we don’t generally source, supply and fit lighting as part of our kitchen delivery, we’re always happy to talk it through from our experience as part of the design process.

Making the most of technology

There are plenty of innovative ideas and new technologies that can help make life easier in the kitchen. From clever ways to keep things within arms reach, to adjustable mechanisms for surfaces and appliances. As well as apps allowing control of appliances and lighting remotely. Our team stays up to date with the latest trends and advancements in accessible kitchen design to offer you the best solutions.
